Pope Benedict XVI's May 2009 Holy Land Visit Sparks Interest in Bible Land Pilgrimages

Pope to Visit the Holy LandPope Benedict XVI's May 2009 Holy Land pilgrimage marked the first Papal visit since Pope John Paul II's trip in 2000 and only the third time a Pope has visited the area. The Holy Father said he wanted to promote peace and follow in the footsteps of Pope John Paul II. Pope Benedict's pilgrimage is already encouraging pilgrims around the world to follow his lead and make their own plans to trace the path of Jesus.

Jordan

During his visit to Jordan the Holy Father said, “I come to Jordan as a pilgrim to venerate holy places that have played such an important part in some of the key events of Biblical history.” He stopped at Jesus' traditional baptism site on the Jordan River and made a pilgrimage to Mount Nebo where Moses once looked out on the Promised Land.

Holy Mass in Jerusalem - Bethlehem - Nazareth

The highlight of the Pope's visit to the Lands of the Bible was Holy Mass in Jerusalem near the Garden of Gethsemane, where thousands participated. The Pope made a day-long visit to Bethlehem with Mass in Manger Square and celebrated Holy Mass on the Mount of Precipice in Nazareth. He also visited Gethsemane Church and the Church of Annunciation.

“The empty tomb speaks to us of hope, the hope that does not disappoint because it is the gift of the Spirit of life.”

Church of the Holy Sepulchre

The Holy Father ended his Holy Land Pilgrimage with a visit to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre where Jesus died, was buried and rose from the dead. “I wish to proclaim anew, to the men and women of our time, the Church’s firm faith that Jesus Christ was crucified, died and was buried, and that on the third day he rose from the dead. Exalted at the right hand of the Father, he has sent us his Spirit for the forgiveness of sins. Apart from him, whom God has made Lord and Christ, there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we are to be saved,” he declared.
